Synopsis
The beggar Bourtai hovers over Conan, intending on robbing what he
thinks is a corpse. The barbarian comes to and forces Bourtai to lead
him off the grounds. Bourtai leads him through a cave system to the
hideout of the local thieves’ guild, and Conan, having once plied his
trade as a thief, feels right at home. Bourtai explains how seven
wizards came to Wan Tengri and overthrew the previous king and now rule
the city with magic and terror. Conan also learns that Kassar, the man
who smuggled Conan into the city, has been captured and will be put to
death. Feeling responsible, Conan vows to save him, and has Boutrai lead
him to the Flam Tower where the wizards rule. The tower itself is
surrounded by the magical red flames that cover the city, and each
untrusting wizard’s personal guard lies ready to attack each other for
the slightest reason. Bourtai and Conan sneak into the underground
passages of the tower, and the two are separated. Conan comes across the
already deceased Kassar, and soon finds himself in an arena, a guest of
the seven wizards. For their entertainment, the wizards send tigers and
men after Conan, culminating in a beautiful masked woman. When Conan
removes the veil, however, he sees only a skull – he is now facing Death
herself.

Bourtai (Earth-616)

Bourtai
Bourtai was a beggar in Wan Tengri who found Conan after he emerged from Tsien Hui’s
pool. He led him underground into the hideout of the local thieves’
guild, where he explained him how the seven wizards came to Wan Tengri,
overthrew the previous king and now ruled the city with magic and
terror. Since the Cimmerian wished to save Kassar the sheep-herd from the wizards’ fury, he then escorted Conan into the underground passages of the Flame Tower, but the two were soon separated.
When Conan managed to escape from the arena of the seven wizards,
Bourtai helped him crawl through the underground catacombs and reach the
top of the Flame Tower to free the Princess. When she was restored as
the legitimate ruler of Wan Tengri, he sailed away with the Cimmerian to
accompany him in his adventures.
Venturing through the desert southeast of the Vilayet Sea,
they both attempted to rescue a man assaulted by bandits, but he
eventually died, just before telling them about the Azure Eye, a great
jewel from the city of Kara-Shehr. A sandstorm consumed them, and when
it dispersed, they found the lost city and began searching through the
ruins. They eventually found it in the castle’s throne room, clutched by
a skeleton hand. Bourtai took the great blue gem, but Conan made him
put it back, and the skeletal hand closed on the gem again. After being
attacked by Kai Shahh and his bandits, Bourtai grabbed the jewel again
and the mysterious guardian creature turned on him, leaving only a
skeleton beside the one holding the gem.

Synopsis
The revived Victorius engages Ka-Zar in a desperate struggle. He’s
unmasked while grappling, revealing his advanced age and the reason for
his drive to reclaim his physical superiority. Victorius manages to
knock Ka-Zar out and prepares to execute him.
Meanwhile, Bobbi takes out the AIM guards outside the fortress,
reclaiming the vial of Super-Soldier Serum. She runs into Zabu, who
tracked his brother from the city, and together they return to the
fortress to make sure Ka-Zar is okay. On their way in, Zabu takes out
Plunderer just as he’s waking up from Ka-Zar’s earlier beating. They
cross Gemini’s path as well, but he manages to avoid conflict and slip
away to resume his Damian Link identity back in town before ending his
possession, returning his mind to the body of Josh Link in prison. Zabu
finds Victorius and Bobbi throws the Serum to Ka-Zar as he wakes up, but
Victorius uses a knockout gas-spewing lance to incapacitate the lady
and the tiger. Once more Ka-Zar rejects the serum, throwing it into a
nearby brazier, destroying it. Despite Victorius believing he now has
the upper hand, Ka-Zar defeats him through sheer force of will,
ultimately throwing his body out the window, where it disappears under
the moat around the fortress.
Afterwards, Dr. Calvin refuses to make more of her Super-Soldier
Serum, much to Nick Fury’s chagrin. Finally, Ka-Zar and Zabu get on a
plane to return home, but not before Ka-Zar and Bobbi share a farewell
kiss.
