Synopsis
Following the defeat of the Mandrill and the Black Spectre, Matt
Murdock decides to remain in New York for the time being in order to get
the District Attourney’s office back in order while Foggy Nelson is
still recovering and bids farewell to Natasha for the time being parting
with a kiss. Out on patrol as Daredevil, Matt broods over his
relationship with the Black Widow and the current state of things in his
life, he returns home just to miss a phone call.
It is from Candace Nelson who is trying to get a hold of Matt
Murdock to represent her now that two FBI agents have come to take her
into protective custody. With no time to wait, they take the research
papers she has collected and is being led out when suddenly her
apartment is crashed by the Gladiator. He critically wounds the two FBI
Agents, takes the research papers and escapes with Candace as his
prisoner.
When news breaks out, Foggy and Matt are worried about Candace’s
well being, and Matt decides to investigate. Going to Empire State
University, where Candace had told him her trouble began, he meets with
School of Journalism teacher Charles Laing. Liang explains that Candace
took an interest in the universities work with the military and stumbled
upon experiments conducted by former ESU professor Ted Sallis regarding
Formula SO-2 that would turn people into pollution breathing creatures
so that the current rate of prophets for progress could continue
unimpeded long after the pollution makes it too toxic for normal humans
to live. The troubling fact about this research is that none of the
research or it’s findings ever went public and stranger still Sallis has
since gone missing in the Florida Everglades.
Traveling out to Citrusville, Florida, Matt Murdock meets with
radio DJ Richard Rory who tells Murdock everything he knows about the
disappearance of Ted Sallis, the strange murders that happened at his
old home, and the creature known as the Man-Thing. Being taken out to
the Sallis property, both Richard and Matt are attacked by the
Gladiator. When Richard is knocked out, Matt slips away to change into
Daredevil.
During the fight, Daredevil has the advantage over his old foe,
until Gladiator’s missing swings cuts loose a tree branch that lands on
Daredevil’s head, knocking him out. Then out of the bushes comes the
Gladiator’s employer, a costumed villain known as the Death-Stalker. He
orders the Gladiator to kill Daredevil, and as the Gladiator raises his
arm to land the killing blow, the Man-Thing shambles out of the swamp to
witness the scene.

Synopsis
As Death-Stalker watches on, the Gladiator is about to lay the
killing blow to Daredevil, but out of the Florida Everglades comes the
Man-Thing, drawn by the emotions on the scene. The muck-monster grabs
the Gladiator’s arm, triggering a fear response in the crook, causing
the Man-Thing’s touch to burn him. As the Gladiator tries in vein to
injure the Man-Thing, Daredevil revives and is shocked by what he is
seeing on the scene.
When the Man-Thing takes notice of Death-Stalkers presence, the
mire monster hesitates before attacking the strange costumed villain.
However, the Death-Stalker proves to have superior strength and easily
knocks the Man-Thing aside. By this point, Daredevil is back on his feet
and attempts to land a punch to Death-Stalker’s face, but much to
Daredevil’s surprise his fist passes right through his enemy’s face
leaving his hand numbingly cold.
As Daredevil continues his attack he is surprised to find that
Death-Stalker can become immaterial at will and his touch causes the Man
Without Fear severe pain causing him to black out once more. Furious
that Death-Stalker didn’t use his death touch on the Man-Thing to begin
with, he yells at his employer who explains he wanted to get a measure
of the Man-Thing’s abilities, Gladiator contains himself realizing that
he is in no place to argue with Death-Stalker unless he can learn the
secret of his “Touch of Death” so that he might double cross
Death-Stalker. Death-Stalker decides to take Daredevil and Richard Rory
back to his hideout in order to see if they have any useful information
before killing them and orders. Taking them inside Ted Sallis’ old home
they begin interrogating Candace Nelson over her knowledge of Operation:
Sulfur.
While back in New York, Foggy Nelson paces aimlessly to hear back
from Matt Murdock about his missing sister when the phone rings. It is
the Black Widow who is looking for Murdock, although she is upset she
feigns being casual in her call and tells Foggy to have him call back.
Later when she hangs up she realizes that now that she and Ivan are
homeless, Matt has no way to contact her. Upset over her stupidity, the
Black Widow then swings off into the air to clear her mind.
While back in Florida, the Death-Stalker is convinced when
Candace tells him that Daredevil and Richard Rory know nothing about
Operation Sulfur and absconds with her leaving the Gladiator behind to
dispose of the two men. The Gladiator douses the house in gasoline and
sets it ablaze and leaves Daredevil and Richard inside to die. Daredevil
revives and just barely manages to free himself and carry Rory outside
to safety. There, Daredevil finds the Man-Thing has taken down the
Gladiator, and seeing that Daredevil is okay, the muck-monster shambles
off into the swamp once more.
Daredevil then changes back into his guise of Matt Murdock, and
drives himself Rory and Gladiator out to a location where they can be
found by the authorities, and later when Rory questions what might have
happened Murdock feigns not knowing what happened either.
Continued to URC # 130 ….
Notes
- The Gladiator appears next in Daredevil #140 (in Italy in URC # 228-229).
- The Man-Thing appears next in Giant-Size Man-Thing #2 (unpublished in Italy).

Synopsis
Continued from last issue…
Iron Man uses his repulsor
technology to save two pedestrians from falling debris. The sharp power
drain greatly weakens Iron Man however and he momentarily collapses.
Slasher and Demitrius meanwhile, retreat to their hidden lair and
broadcast their success to their mysterious master, Mister Kline. Kline
tells them that they have actually failed however and that the
unexpected arrival of Iron Man has put a damper on his plans.
Later, Tony Stark and fellow industrialist Ben Crandal appear
before a senate subcommittee. The committee chairman accuses Stark and
Crandal of gross negligence in the construction of several buildings and
items, including those targeted by Slasher and Demitrius. As Tony
testifies before the panel, an invisible beam of energy blasts through
the Capitol Building. Tony runs off, changes into Iron Man, then flies
outside.
He runs into Slasher and Demitrius and begins fighting them.
Demitrius’ ESP powers begin going haywire, owing largely to his close
proximity to another Esper,
Marianne Rodgers. The increasing psychic energy causes Demitrius to
mutate and he develops two giant tumors upon his brow. Driven mad, he
turns on the Slasher and uses his powers to weaken Iron Man as well.
Marianne arrives on the scene and distracts Demitrius, enabling Iron Man
the opportunity to take both he and the Slasher down.
Without warning, Marianne Rodgers collapses and Iron Man rushes to her side, cradling her unconscious body in his arms.
Notes
- One scene shows Mister Kline speaking to a mysterious master over a television monitor. This is later revealed to be Baal, a super-sentient computer intelligence from the far distant future of the reality known as Earth-71778. Baal makes his first actual appearance in Daredevil #84 (in Italy in DEVC # 83).
