FANTASTIC FOUR

prima serie Editoriale Corno

Contiene inoltre : PRINCIPE NAMOR IL SUB-MARINER

Risultati immagini per fantastic four 60

Meanwhile in Dr. Doom’s castle, the imprisoned and powerless Silver Surfer is tormented by one of Doom’s guards, while elsewhere, the Inhuman royal family has found a location and have begun constructing a new home.

As the battle against Dr. Doom rages on, Reed deploys his anti-cosmic flying wing device which siphons off some of Doom’s cosmic power.

Enraged, Doom chases after it into Earth’s atmosphere, but as Doom reaches outer space the barrier that Galactus created preventing the Surfer from leaving Earth stops Doom, who seemingly perishes as a result as only the Surfer’s board returns to Earth, speeding towards Doom’s castle to free its true master.

Continuity Notes

  • The Black Panther was last seen assisting the Fantastic Four in Fantastic Four #56 (in Italy in F4C #52) during their battle against Klaw. He next appears in Fantastic Four Annual #5 (in Italy in F4C #67) wherein he meets the Inhuman royal family and battles the Psycho-Man.
  • Doctor Doom mentions his hands were injured the last time he battled the Thing, this happened in Fantastic Four #40 (in Italy in F4C #35).
  • The Watcher refuses to interfere because his people have made a vow not to interfere in the lives of those they watch as revealed in Tales of Suspense #53 (in Italy in F4C #56) and Original Sin #0 (in Italy in MARVMINIS #151). Uatu leaves his observatory on the moon as he previously interfered in the lives of the Fantastic Four during the arrival of Galactus in Fantastic Four #4850 (in Italy in F4C #44-46).
  • The Inhuman royal family managed to leave the Great Refuge last issue. The Inhumans previously experienced human prejudice toward them seen in Thor #150152 (in Italy in THC #47-48), and Inhumans Special #1 (unpublished in Italy).
  • Doctor Doom slaps into the barrier that Galactus put around the Earth to trap the Silver Surfer on the planet after his betrayal in Fantastic Four #50 (in Italy in F4C #46). As explained in Daredevil #37 (in Italy in DEVC #33), Doom survived this impact, and the barrier slowly returned him to the group while stripping him of the Power Cosmic. As revealed next issue, the Power Cosmic is returned to the Silver Surfer.

Synopsis

Alone in a cavern, the Sub-Mariner is haunted with dreams of a strange man taunting him about erasing his memories. Waking up from the dream, the former ruler of Atlantis begins to wonder who this person is and what they may be responsible for his lack of memories of the time just prior to his amnesia.

Unable to jar his memory, the Sub-Mariner decides to take a more direct approach and flies over North America in hopes of finding the answers that he seeks. Along the way, he is picked up by a U.S. early warning radar station that sends out an air force jet to intercept him. When they fire their missiles at him, he easily catches them and tosses them back at his attacker, destroying the plane although the pilot manages to eject safely.

While back in the ruins of Atlantis, the Atlanteans being picking up the pieces of their city following the Plunderer’s attack, and Warlord Seth breaks the bad news of Namor’s supposed death, and the two mourn the loss of their leader despite his recent branding as a traitor when the people of Atlantis believed Namor was allied with the Plunderer. As Seth comforts Domra he secretly wishes that he could win her heart.

The Sub-Mariner meanwhile finds himself drawn to Antarctica once again drawn by his senses to a seeming dead end. Furious he strikes an icy mountain wall revealing a hidden cavern. Deciding to venture inside, Namor finds a secret room with strange phosphorescent paintings on the walls and a hidden frozen city. There he is attacked by a strange creature that is guarding the temple. Although it’s extreme cold saps Namor’s strength, the prince of Atlantis manages to knock it through a wall, knocking the creature out. Behind it he finds the man that has been haunting his dreams waiting for him.

This story is continued in Iron Man and Sub-Mariner #1 (in Italy in MARVEL MASTERWORKS NAMOR IL SUB-MARINER II).

Notes

  • With Marvel Comics no longer under a contracted publishing deal with DC Comics to have their titles published, Marvel was able to publish more titles. As a result, Tales to Astonish had been discontinued to make way for independent titles for both the Sub-Mariner and the Hulk. The Hulk would appear in his own title The Incredible Hulk which would continue publication using the Tales to Astonish issue numbering, the first issue being #102. However, as the Sub-Mariner would have one more serialized story completed for a half-book format, he and Iron Man (who had his next story in must the same condition when Tales of Suspense changed to Captain America) would appear in a one-shot titled Iron Man and Sub-Mariner #1  (in Italy in MARVEL MASTERWORKS NAMOR IL SUB-MARINER II) before appearing in the premiere issue Sub-Mariner #1 (in this same italian issue).
  • A second volume of Tales to Astonish would appear in 1979 and last 14 issue and would reprint a number of the Sub-Mariner stories (although altered) from the original Tales to Astonish run. A third volume of Tales to Astonish would appear in 1994, but would only be a one shot. It would feature a story featuring the first group of heroes to appear in the pages of Tales to Astonish: Henry Pym, the Wasp and the Hulk.

Synopsis

Story continued from Iron Man and Sub-Mariner #1 (in Italy in MARVEL MASTERWORKS NAMOR IL SUB-MARINER II).

With the Sub-Mariner trapped under tons of frozen ice, Destiny decides to mock Namor further by gloating over his victory by revealing the many lost memories that Namor has yet to recover after his years with amnesia. Using his destiny helmet, Destiny links their minds and reveals all.

Namor is taken back in time to the days when his father, Leonard McKenzie, was part of an Antarctic exploration expedition where they would be required to blast ice in order to get by. As the original Atlantis was below the area, their dynamiting caused great upheaval in the ancient under water city. Lord Thakorr would send his daughter, Princess Fen up to explore on the surface, using a potion that would allow her to breath on land.

Fen would board MacKenzie’s ship and eventually learn English while the two would fall in love and soon were married. Not aware of this, Thakorr would send a team up to recover Fen, clashing with the crew and seemingly slaying them all, and returning Fen to their kingdom before learning the truth. However, Leonard’s legacy would live on as Fen would be pregnant with his child, giving birth to the human/Atlantean hybrid Namor, prince to the throne of Atlantis.

Reaching adulthood, Namor would first be a menace to the surface people before joining the allies in fighting the Nazi’s during World War II. Eventually the war would end and Namor would take on a career of crime fighting on the surface while also battling threats at home such as his evil cousin Byrrah. Soon Destiny would strike at Atlantis, and lure the Sub-Mariner into a trap where he would use his powers to strike the prince of Atlantis with amnesia. In a final blow, he would cause an explosion that would seemingly kill Princess Fen and Lord Thakorr. With Namor blighted with a memory loss, Destiny would go into suspended animation to clash with his foe in five years time.

Namor would wander and eventually end up in New York City, initially attacked by people who recognized him, the former Sub-Mariner would gain a disguise and wander off into obscurity, becoming a homeless derelict. In recent years while living in a half-way house, Namor would be recognized by the Human Torch, who was living there after briefly quitting the Fantastic Four.

The Torch would remember the war time hero and revive his memory, however Namor finding Atlantis in ruins would wage a war against the surface, leading to his first clash against the Fantastic Four, a battle he would lose when the FF would manage to destroy Namor’s creature Giganto.

Continued to next issue…

Notes

Sub-Mariner last appeared in Iron Man and The Sub-Mariner #1 (in Italy in MARVEL MASTERWORKS NAMOR IL SUB-MARINER II).

This story recounts most of Namor’s history, including a great deal of material retold from his first Silver Age appearance in Fantastic Four #4 (in Italy in F4C #3).
