I FANTASTICI 4

FANTASTIC FOUR

prima serie Editoriale Corno

Synopsis

While the Fantastic Four are busy with another one of Reed’s experiments and are summoned by the Thing to see Alicia’s stone carvings, Dr. Doom has returned and uses the Fantastic Four’s connection to comic book creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to trick Reed Richards to swing by the Marvel Comics office to help on their latest adaptation of the FF’s epics.

Richards is then captured and taken back to Dr. Doom’s lair, where Doom explains he escaped death in their last encounter when he was rescued by members of the alien Ovid race. He explains that the Ovid’s taught Doom their ability to switch bodies with their mind, and so switches bodies with Reed Richards.

Just then the rest of the team smash into the room, and Doom (In Reed’s body) convince the FF to attack Reed (Who they are unaware is in Doom’s body) trapping “Doom” in a glass holding cell.

Convincing the others that he is really Reed Richards, Dr. Doom reverses the mind-swap in battle, however becomes victim of his own plot when he is blasted by the shrink-ray and shrinks beyond micro-scopic size.

Notes

  • The Ovoids are seen again in Silver Surfer Vol 3 #19 (in Italy in SSPP #19).
  • Stan Lee and Jack Kirby are never clearly depicted in this story. They are always seen in shadow or otherwise obscured. This trend would continue in their future Fantastic Fourappearances.
  • The Human Torch calls Alicia Ben’s “girl friend.” This marks the first time she’s formally referred to as such. This is also the first time we see some of Alicia’s sculptures.
  • The Invisible Girl manages to knock Doctor Doom/Reed unconscious by hitting him on the head from behind with a vase.
  • A working version of the Reducing Ray will appear next in Fantastic Four #16 (in Italy in F4C # 12).
  • Stan Lee will appear next in Strange Tales #123 (in Italy in F4C #24).
  • Jack Kirby previously appeared in Millie the Model #107 (unpublished in Italy). He will appear next in Fantastic Four Annual #3 (in Italy in F4C # 39).

Synopsis

After visiting with some local fans of theirs, the Fantastic Four get another mail delivery from their mailman Willie Lumpkin.

Reading their fan mail, the FF responds to readers letters:
After trying another syrum to change him back to human form, Ben and Reed tell the story about how they met in College and eventually fought togeather in World War 2, they then retell the origin of the Fantastic Four. When Sue is upset by reader mail that expresses peoples dislike of her and question her usefulness on the team, the FF angrily defend Sue by telling of the times that Sue helped the team defeat the Skrulls, save them from Dr. Doom’s death traps.

After to cheer Sue up they take her aboard the flying saucer they have since their adventure on Planet X where Sue finds a surprise birthday cake waiting for her. As they celebrate Sue’s birthday, Willie is slogging back to the Baxter Building with another bag full of fan mail for the FF.

Notes

  • This story reveals a lot of previously unknown information about the Fantastic Four’s background and history. However, the fact that both Reed and Ben were World War II veterans should be considered topical due to Earth-616’s sliding time scale.
  • Willie Lumpkin previously appeared in a short-lived King Features syndicated comic strip called Willie Lumpkin (what else?), which Stan Lee and legendary Archie Comics artist Dan DeCarlo created in 1960.
  • The Xantha Saucer makes a cameo appearance. The Fantastic Four acquired the ship in Fantastic Four #7 (in Italy in F4C # 4).

Synopsis

The Earth is visited by an intergalactic tourist by the name of Impossible Man, a being who can turn into anything he wishes and has come to Earth seeking amusement.

The FF try to stop Impossible Man but this proves to be even more trouble when Impossible Man finds their interventions even more amusing.

Realizing that the Impossible Man craves attention, Reed informs everyone to just ignore the Impossible Man, who eventually get’s bored and leaves the Earth.

Notes

  • The Impossible Man appears next in Fantastic Four #175 (in Italy in F4C # 190). Unlike many other early Fantastic Four villains, the Impossible Man dosen’t reappear until the mid-1970’s mainly because of bad fanmail that the character got and Roy Thomas had to convince Stan Lee who took his letters really seriously.
