Synopsis

Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel, still disguised as ordinary people, crouch
over the inert form of Dr. Strange in the sanctum of Marie LaVeau, the
Witch-Queen of New Orleans. The witch-queen has taken the astral form of
Dr. Strange to an alien dimension, where he hopes to learn the spells
that will liberate his disciple and lover, Clea, whose soul is
imprisoned within the realm of the Orb of Agamotto. Strange does not
trust Marie, but he has no alternative. Thus, as the mystic master and
the witch-queen pass out of realms that he knows into ones he has never
explored, he opens his mind for full telepathic rapport with her. The
agony is unendurable, but he realizes that there can be no turning back.
Whatever happens, he is at her mercy.

As soon as Strange telepathically links with Marie LaVeau,
suddenly Clea unleashes a devastating attack that breaks through his
shield. Unfortunately, Silver Dagger at last begins to gather his mystic
powers. Using spells, he slowly forces Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel back
into Marie LaVeau’s sanctum and then a spell shoves Spider-Man against
the crystalline Orb of Agamotto. Tentacles emerge from the sphere and
pull him inside as Ms. Marvel strives with her Kree powers to counter
Dagger’s magic. But when Spider-Man enters the Orb, parts of his reality
overwhelm the reality — the domain of Dormammu — that Clea is trying to
recreate within the Orb to destroy Dr. Strange. Thus an image of the
Punisher machine-guns Clea in a surprise attack, and Dr. Strange quickly
overpowers her. At the same time, Silver Dagger casts a spell that
makes him grow in size and strength, but before he can defeat Ms.
Marvel, he collapses, struck from behind by his own dagger, wielded by
Marie LaVeau. Thus, at midnight, Wong is startled in Dr. Strange’s
Sanctum Sanctorum when Ms. Marvel, Strange, Spider-Man, Marie LaVeau,
the unconscious Silver Dagger, and the Orb of Agamotto all materialize
behind him.

Strange quickly frees Clea’s soul from the Orb, adding a spell to
keep her from remembering her experiences until he can investigate
everything that happened. As she revives and embraces him, he wonders
what part of her was represented by the fire-demon that he fought, and
where and how she learned to wield its power. The mortally wounded
Silver Dagger is quickly transferred back to his prison in the Orb,
where he will remain alive but helpless. It is risky to keep Dagger
alive, thinks Strange, for if he should ever face death and survive, and
thereby attain true enlightenment, his next battle against Strange
might end differently. Then Strange thanks Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel for
their invaluable aid, and he asks Marie to explain how she managed to
overcome Silver Dagger’s spells. She replies that she was able to bend
them enough to send Strange the warning in the tarot cards and later to
send her acolytes to slay Strange’s physical form when they were both in
the astral plane. Had Strange been slain, Silver Dagger would have
remained trapped forever within the Orb of Agamotto. She serves the Old
Gods, she continues, and even though Silver Dagger promised to spare her
if she served him, she knew that he was lying, and so she bided her
time until the appropriate moment to strike. Then, as she casts a spell
to transport herself to New Orleans, she tells Strange to heed the
tarot, for its prophecy is not yet done. As Strange holds Clea, he
thinks of the final card of the tarot layout, the Tower. It is the most
ominous card in the deck, portending his utter destruction. In saving
Clea, he may have lost his own soul forever.

Notes

  • Stephen Strange was originally imprisoned inside the Orb of Agamotto by Silver Dagger in Doctor Strange #1.

Notes

  • This is the first issue of Daredevil by artist Frank Miller.
Miller will eventually become the writer and artist of the series.
Many would say his run on this title epitomized the character of
Daredevil. Much of Miller’s storylines are used for Daredevil’s later
    motion picture.
  • Death-Stalker has made Daredevil a tombstone with the epitath, “Matthew Michael Murdock May He Burn in Hell.

Synopsis

Tony Stark has been invited to be a guest speaker at a special
S.H.I.E.L.D./NATO conference. Before leaving for the conference, Tony
affects some last minute repairs to his armor and secures it inside of a
special briefcase bound to his wrist. His secretary Mrs. Arbogast
intercoms him and tells Tony that Bethany Cabe has arrived to see him.
Tony goes to the reception hall Stark International and greets Bethany.
However, he’s on a tight schedule and doesn’t really have time to talk.
He goes to the airfield where he instructs his personal mechanic Rhodey
to let him fly solo on one of the SI helicopters.

Stark flies to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier where the joint
conference is being held. He is suspicious of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s recent
actions since he knows that Spymaster, who recently tried to assassinate
him, was armed with S.H.I.E.L.D. ordnance. Nick Fury greets Tony in the
hanger bay, but neither men are aware that they are being secretly
monitored by a group of rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Fury assigns the
agents to keep an eye on Tony until the conference is ready to begin.

Tony manages to sneak away from his chaperons and enters one of
the many computer rooms located on the carrier. He attaches a syphon
relay from his briefcase into the computer terminal and downloads
information that might answer the question of why S.H.I.E.L.D. would
send Spymaster to kill him.

The rogue agents discover what Tony is doing and release PC-2 gas
into the room knocking Stark out. They collect his unconscious body and
pitch him (as well as his handcuffed briefcase) out of an open hangar
bay.

As Tony begins plummeting to his death, he suddenly awakens and
quickly removes the components of his Iron Man armor from the briefcase.
He dons the armor mere inches before he would hit the ground. He flies
back up to the Helicarrier and tracks down the men responsible for
throwing him off the ship. He overhears them admitting to hiring
Spymaster as well as their intended scheme to put pressure on SI’s
stockholders to sell their shares to S.H.I.E.L.D. Iron Man attacks and
stuns two of the three agents. Their ringleader, Buck Richlen, tries to
escape, but Iron Man gives chase and corners him in the main conference
room. As Iron Man flies into the room, he finds that Buck has
incapacitated Nick Fury and is holding a gun to his head. He tells Iron
Man that he must take his own life or else he will kill Fury.

Notes

  • First appearance of Jim Rhodes.
Rhodes becomes a major supporting character for the series and a
successor to the role of Iron Man. In recent years, Rhodes has adopted
his own stylized armor and adventures as the super-hero War Machine.
  • First appearance of Mrs. Arbogast. Mrs. Arbogast becomes a major supporting character in this series.
  • Issue includes cameo appearances of various unmanned Iron Man armors.
  • Spymaster failed to assassinate Tony Stark at the beginning of last issue.
  • In this issue, Iron Man’s Uni-Beam seemingly malfunctions when it suddenly activates without any prompt from Tony himself. The cause behind this malfunction is revealed in Iron Man #120.
  • As seen on page one, this isue is Story #LG165.

Trivia

  • On page one, Tony Stark uses an instrument designed by “Blaff and Dexter”, probably a spoof on Black and Decker Company.
