The Band è stato uno storico gruppo rock canadese, formatosi nel 1967 a Toronto e scioltosi nel 1976 per poi riformarsi nel 1983 fino al 1999.
I componenti della band erano: Robbie Robertson (chitarra, pianoforte); Richard Manuel (organo, armonica, sassofono, batteria); Garth Hudson (tastiere, sintetizzatore, sassofono); Rick Danko (basso, violino) e Levon Helm (batteria, cordofoni).
Iniziarono a suonare insieme facendosi chiamare The Hawks e successivamente Levon And The Hawks; in questo periodo produssero un singolo intitolato Canadian Squires, per la Ware Records; la prima grande occasione, però, fu quando Bob Dylan li reclutò come propria band durante il suo tour del 1966 (documentato nell’album discografico The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live 1966, The “Royal Albert Hall” Concert e nel film documentario Eat the Document); con Dylan il gruppo incise anche l’album The Basement Tapes, in cui è inclusa la canzone Katie’s Been Gone, probabilmente dedicata a Karen Dalton, stella maledetta del panorama del Greenwich Village.
Dopo aver lavorato con Dylan, il gruppo si ritirò per la prima volta
per incidere del materiale proprio, e da allora è iniziata la loro
instancabile carriera costellata di successi. La Canadian Music Hall of Fame e la Rock and Roll Hall of Fame li hanno inclusi nella lista degli artisti storici; la rivista Rolling Stone li ha classificati al #50 posto nella classifica delle band immortali.
Anthology is a 2 LP greatest hits compilation by the Canadian-American rock group The Band, released in 1978. In 1982, the set was re-released as two separate albums, Anthology Volume 1 and Anthology Volume 2.

The Band was a rock group active from 1967 to 1976 and again from 1983 to 1999. The original group (1967-1976) consisted of four Canadians: Robbie Robertson (guitar, piano, vocals); Richard Manuel (piano, harmonica, drums, saxophone, organ, vocals); Garth Hudson (organ, piano, clavinet, accordion, synthesizer, saxophone); and Rick Danko (bass guitar, violin, trombone, vocals), and one American, Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, bass guitar, vocals).
The members of the Band first came together as they joined rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins‘ backing group, The Hawks, one by one between 1958 and 1963. Upon leaving Hawkins in 1964 they were known as The Levon Helm Sextet (the sixth member being sax player Jerry Penfound), then Levon and the Hawks (without Penfound). In 1965, they released a single on Ware Records under the name the Canadian Squires, but returned as Levon and the Hawks for a recording session for Atco later in 1965. At about the same time, Bob Dylan recruited Helm and Robertson for two concerts, then the entire group for his U.S. tour in 1965 and world tour in 1966. They also joined him on the informal recordings that later became The Basement Tapes.
Dubbed “The Band” by their record company (a name believed to be
derived from how they were referred to during their tenure with Dylan),
the group left Saugerties, New York, to begin recording their own material. They recorded two of the most acclaimed albums of the late 1960s: their 1968 debut Music from Big Pink (featuring the single “The Weight“) and 1969’s The Band. They broke up in 1976, but reformed in 1983 without founding guitarist Robbie Robertson.
Although the Band was always more popular with music journalists and
fellow musicians than with the general public, they have remained an
admired and influential group. The group was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked them #50 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and in 2008, they received the Grammy‘s Lifetime Achievement Award.
