Synopsis
Answering the summons of an anonymous letter, the Vision travels to a
frozen food locker in a warehouse on the lower east side of Manhattan,
there he is met by the Grim Reaper who offers him a proposition. If the
Vision aids the Grim Reaper in getting revenge on the Avengers, he would
transfer the Vision’s mind into the body of Wonder Man (since Vision’s
brain patterns are based on that of the deceased hero, the Grim Reaper
believes that Vision is his brother.) which he has been preserving since
his death some time before (in Avengers #9,
the Grim Reaper blames the Avengers for his brother’s death, in Italy on THC # 16).) Not
giving into the Reaper’s offer, the Vision refuses, however the Reaper
gives him a medallion that would put them into direct contact should the
Vision change his mind. The Vision then leaves to return to his
comrades the Avengers. At Avengers Mansion, the Scarlet Witch prepares
for monitor duty where she is once more confronted by Hawkeye who
professes his love for her again and makes and advance that the Vision
walks in on and walks away from before he can hear the Scarlet Witch
rebuff Hawkeye’s advances.
Meanwhile in space, the Sentinels return from an attempt to destroy the sun to prevent further mutations following the events in ( Uncanny X-Men #57–59 , in Italy on CAP Corno # 61 to 63),
their return is reported on the news, which causes Quicksilver to think
back to his last encounter with the mutant hunting robots. The Scarlet
Witch appears and tells the Avengers that she is going for an evening
stroll in Central Park. While the other Avengers attend to personal
matters, the Vision watches Wanda’s stroll from a window, when he spots
an approaching Sentinel.
Vision engages the Sentinel alone while Jarvis informs the other
Avengers of the trouble. As he Avengers attack they find their powers
are of little effect against the robot, which escapes with Wanda via
“ultra-linear leap.” As the Avengers begin to plan how to rescue Wanda,
Quicksilver angrily pushes them away because they were unable to prevent
the Sentinel from taking Wanda in the first place.
Notes
- Plot suggestion by Claremont.
- The Sentinels story continues from X-Men #58 – X-Men #60 (in Italy in CAP Corno 62/64).
- The Sentinels note upon examination of the Vision that he is an android of “three decades vintage”. This is the first hint that the Vision actually is, or is based upon, technology of the Original Human Torch.
- Revealed in Avengers: Forever Vol 1 8 (in Italy in MARVEL OMNIBUS Panini VENDICATORI PER SEMPRE),
this is the beginning of Immortus’s subtle plot to romantically align
the Vision and Earth-616’s “Nexus Being”, the Scarlet Witch. - The Grim Reaper previously appeared in Avengers #79 (in Italy in THC # 94). He will appear next in Avengers #106 (in Italy in THC # 116)

Synopsis
The Scarlet Witch has been kidnapped by
the recently returned Sentinels, and the Avengers are formulating a
plan to try and rescue her from their clutches when they realize that
Quicksilver is missing. Quicksilver has decided to act on his own,
traveling to the Sentinels’ last base, only to find that the base is
empty, but that devices were recently taken. Thinking back to the events
of the past, he recalls the time just after the Sentinels’ last defeat
when he, Scarlet Witch, Vanisher, Blob, Mastermind, Unus and Toad were
freed by Larry Trask and Judge Chalmers. Quicksilver realizes that
perhaps if anybody moved the devices it’s probably Larry Trask.
Quicksilver then tracks down Larry Trask to Judge Chalmer’s residence
and captures Larry in order to learn the location of the Sentinels.
While back at Avengers Mansion, the Avengers attempt to learn the
location of the Sentinels while the Vision contemplates the offer the
Grim Reaper gave him to transfer his mind into the body of Wonder Man.
The Avengers eventually pinpoint the location where the Sentinels are
located and rush to the Quinjets to rescue Wanda. When Rick Jones
attempts to join them they rebuff his request because he has no super
powers. While elsewhere Quicksilver is forced to remove the amulet that
suppresses Larry Trask’s mutant powers before he learns that the
Sentinels have built a base in Australia. He then rushes off there,
taking Larry Trask with him.
In Australia, the Avengers arrive at the “ant hill” base of the
Sentinels, where they are attacked by some defending drones who give the
Avengers a hard time. While aboard a commercial airliner, Larry learns
(via his mutant powers that allow him to see the future) that the
Avengers are not winning their fight, and that the Sentinels’ leader,
known as Number Two, is plotting to cause a solar flare that will
destroy the entire Earth.
Notes
- Rick Jones saga continues from this issue in Captain Marvel #22 (in Italy in F4C # 76).
